Balancing Eggs
There is a myth that you can balance eggs on their tips during spring equinox and only during this day. It's a fun challenge that let's your students find the eggs center of gravity to try and balance the egg. But the real truth here is that you can do this on any day of the year, the myth stems "from the thought that since the Sun and Moon are equidistant from the earth, the pull of gravity is equalized and therefore an egg is less likely to fall over." - Harry E. Keller, Ph.D., CEO of Smart Science Education Inc. It isn't about the Sun and Moon at all. It is only about finding a "good egg" or as Scholastic News puts it, "the key is finding an egg with a yolk centered in the shell," and Keller agrees.
It would be a very fun science activity to do with students and have them hypothesize about this myth and then try doing the experiment on a different day other than spring equinox.
