Blogging is a great way to connect with your classroom, especially your students' parents. My coordinating teacher that I am teacher assisting for uses a Weebly blog for so many things. She uploads assignments and homework just in case a student fails to bring it home with them or if "the dog ate it." She posts about upcoming events and what is happening inside the classroom as far as the curriculum. She also has an about me section and contact information. Any parent can contact her directly by going onto her blog and print/download anything that their child is missing. This is a great way for parents to stay up to date with their child in the classroom.
Blogs can allow the reader to comment and speak their mind on the current topic. I find it very similar to social media. It is a way to check up on things at your own time if you are the reader. It is very useful for the blogger because they can organize everything in an artistic way that best suits them and their readers.
Another great use for a blog is that you can have your students post on the blog and comment on other posts from their classmates. This will create a discussion and allow the students to bounce ideas off one another without being in class or getting stuck on regular homework at home. The only downside that I can see for a blog would be that it is definitely for the tech-savvy or those with a computer/smart phone. On the upside, if you do not own a device as such, you can simply call the teacher or meet face to face to go over any concerns. If a student doesn't own a computer then there is still paper that can be written on for such assignments or they can take a fun trip (with an adult) to their local library to get on a computer there.
