I have taken many college courses, educationally based of course, that really get into technology, especially when teaching math subjects. I am most familiar with Geogebra and Maple. Geogebra is a great way for students to expand their minds with geometry. It helps them really see shapes behave in a way they never thought possible. It is a student-friendly program that many ages can use.
Other than that, Maple is also a great program for more complex math equations and it is great to quickly find the answers to them without wasting a whole tree to figure it out. Although Maple can do elementary calculations, it is best fit for the high school and college levels.
There are so many other new technologies that are used in the classroom. SMART boards are fantastic for one. They are like giant touch screens for your classroom! And it amazes me how far the overhead projector has come along since I was in elementary. I remember this big grey box thing that had to be wheeled around and got in everyone's way. Now there are these things called Elmo projectors that can be placed right on a desk and you don't need transparencies to use it!
All of these advanced new technologies in the classroom are really great, but we as teachers have to keep in mind that textbooks and good ol' lectures still serve an amazing purpose. There are still some things that technology cannot teach you.
